Gangster Old English font

Gangster Old English font generator, copy and paste

Type a word, copy it, and paste it in the blackletter characters the style is built on. It goes into an Instagram bio, a username, a Discord name or a document with nothing installed and nothing to pay, because these are Unicode characters rather than a font file.

What no character can give you is the handwork. The section headed "what the drawn lettering has" is about that, honestly, before you paste something and wonder why it looks flatter than the lettering you pictured.

Every blackletter style

The six styles this gangster font generator makes

Every blackletter set in Unicode, converting whatever you typed above, each with what is wrong with it. Bold Fraktur is the one to use: it is the only complete blackletter alphabet there is, so no letter in your word falls back to a different weight. The other fourteen styles, the scripts and the enclosed ones, are on the homepage.

Bold Fraktur

Blackletter

π•²π–†π–“π–Œπ–˜π–™π–Šπ–—

Safe in all 5 apps we checked

The closest of the six and the one to use. Heavy strokes, complete alphabet, and it is the only blackletter set Unicode encodes without gaps, so no letter falls back to a different weight in the middle of a word.

Fraktur

Blackletter

π”Šπ”žπ”«π”€π”°π”±π”’π”―

Safe in all 5 apps we checked

The same shapes with the ink turned down. It reads as lighter and more bookish than the lettering people picture, and five of its capitals come from a different part of Unicode, so C, H, I, R and Z sit at a noticeably different weight.

Struck Through

Blackletter

π•²ΜΆπ–†ΜΆπ–“ΜΆπ–ŒΜΆπ–˜ΜΆπ–™ΜΆπ–ŠΜΆπ–—ΜΆ

Can look wrong in 4 of 5 apps

A line through the middle, drawn by a combining mark that rides along after every letter rather than by the letterforms. How continuous it looks is up to the app, so the same string can come out cleanly struck in one place and dashed in another.

Underlined

Blackletter

π•²Μ²π–†Μ²π–“Μ²π–ŒΜ²π–˜Μ²π–™Μ²π–ŠΜ²π–—Μ²

Can look wrong in 4 of 5 apps

The same trick underneath, and it survives in more places than the struck version. The line still belongs to a separate character following each letter, which is why a copied word carries twice as many characters as it has letters.

Spaced Fraktur

Blackletter

π•²β€‰π–†β€‰π–“β€‰π–Œβ€‰π–˜β€‰π–™β€‰π–Šβ€‰π–—

Can look wrong in 1 of 5 apps

Bold Fraktur with a space after every letter, which some bios need in order not to collapse the line. It buys legibility and loses the tight interlocking that makes the style look like lettering rather than typing.

Ornate Fraktur

Blackletter

ΰΌΊπ•²π–†π–“π–Œπ–˜π–™π–Šπ–—ΰΌ»

Can look wrong in 1 of 5 apps

Bold Fraktur with a bracket at each end of the whole line. It is the nearest thing here to a flourish and it is nothing like one: the two marks are Tibetan punctuation, they sit outside the word rather than joining it, and they are the same two marks whatever you type.

Copied

What the drawn lettering has that characters do not

The style is blackletter underneath, so the letters above are the right letters. The look people actually picture comes from what was added on top of them by hand: long tapered tails running off the last letter, sharp wedge-shaped entry strokes, hairline strokes connecting one letter to the next, and spacing tightened word by word until the whole thing locks together.

Every one of those is a decision made for one specific word. A character cannot hold any of them, because a character is one fixed shape reused in every word you will ever type it in. That is the trade: you get the skeleton of the style, it pastes everywhere, and nothing is installed.

Which is worth knowing before you paste rather than afterwards. Anyone selling you a gangster font that copies and pastes with the flourishes intact is selling you something that does not exist.

Gangsta, thug, mafia, mobster: one set of characters

A gangster font generator, a gangster text generator, a mafia font generator, a thug font generator and a mobster font generator all hand back the same characters, because Unicode holds one set of blackletter letters and every one of them reaches for it. The names come from what somebody is picturing rather than from any difference in the letters, which is why comparing these tools by name gets you nowhere. The word order moves around as much as the wording does: an old english gangster font generator is the same search as a gangster old english one, typed in the other direction.

Chicano lettering and graffiti old english are the two that name something real and specific, and both of them name a way of drawing rather than a set of characters. That is the West Coast hand style, and it is the reason the section above exists. If it has to flow as well, the gangster Old English cursive font page sets script against blackletter and names the cursive hands scribes really wrote.

Gothic is the same characters under a different word again, and it carries a complication of its own: it also names a family of plain sans serifs and a real historical alphabet, so one search returns three things that look nothing alike. The gothic font generator page sorts that out.

One letter at a time, and why the C is the odd one

Gangster Old English letters are wanted one at a time about as often as whole words, usually as an initial. Any of them can be copied on its own from the alphabet chart, with the plain letter printed underneath, which matters more than it sounds: a blackletter E and a blackletter G are hard to tell apart from their neighbours until something names them.

The C is the one people ask about, and it has a specific cause. In Fraktur, five capitals are not where the rest of the alphabet lives: C, H, I, R and Z were encoded years earlier for mathematics, in a block called Letterlike Symbols, and Unicode will not encode the same character twice. So that alphabet is assembled from two places, and those five can sit at a different weight from their neighbours or fail to render at all on an older device.

Bold Fraktur has no gaps, which settles it for most people.

If it is going on skin

Copy a word from here and send it to your artist. It communicates the style in one message, which is the useful thing text can do for a tattoo.

It is not the artwork, though, and it will not become the artwork by being made larger. These are screen characters with one set of shapes, so scaling them up gives you the same letters and more pixels. A tattooist redraws the word at stencil size from a real typeface, very often the Cloister Black font, which is behind a large share of this lettering, and that redrawing is exactly where the tails, the entry strokes and the fit between letters come from. It is why the finished piece looks like lettering and the pasted version looks like text.

If you want a picture rather than a line of text to send, the tattoo page does that properly: it sets your words, and any year beside them, in eight real typefaces and saves a PNG drawn at three times the size on screen. It also lists the letter pairs that blur into each other once blackletter is on skin, which is worth reading before a name is final.

Questions

Questions about gangster Old English

What is the gangster Old English font called?

It has no single name, which is why searching for one is frustrating. The typographic family is blackletter, the style people mean is closest to fraktur, and the specific look comes from West Coast and Chicano hand lettering rather than from any font file. Where a font is involved it is usually Old English Text MT, which ships with Microsoft Office, or Cloister Black. The characters on this page are Unicode rather than a font, which is why they paste anywhere without being installed.

Can I copy and paste a gangster Old English font into Instagram?

Yes, and that is the one thing this page can genuinely do for you. Type your word above, copy it, and paste it into a bio, a caption, a Discord name or a document. Nothing is installed, because what you copied is a set of characters rather than a font, and the shape travels inside the text. Usernames are the exception worth testing before you commit to one, because a fair number of sites refuse anything outside plain A to Z at signup.

Is this gangster font generator free?

Yes, with nothing to sign up for and nothing to install. It is worth knowing why, because "free" means something different here than on a font site: those are giving away a file with a licence attached, and some of the ones labelled free for personal use are not free for a logo or a shirt. Nothing is being licensed to you here at all. Unicode characters are part of the text standard every device already implements, so they belong to nobody and cost nothing to use commercially.

Why does my text not look like the lettering I have seen?

Because most of that lettering was drawn rather than typed. The hand style adds long tapered tails, sharp entry strokes and hairline connectors between letters, and every one of those is a decision made for that specific word by the person drawing it. A character cannot carry any of it: Unicode gives you one fixed shape per letter, the same shape every time, in every word. You get the skeleton of the style and none of the handwork.

Why does the gangster Old English C look wrong?

In Fraktur it is borrowed. Five capitals, C, H, I, R and Z, were encoded years earlier for mathematics in a separate block, and Unicode never encodes a character twice, so that alphabet is assembled from two places and those five do not always match the weight of the rest. Bold Fraktur has no such gaps, which is why it is first in the rows above and why a word with a C in it should use it.

Which gangster Old English style should I use for a name?

Bold Fraktur, unless you have a specific reason not to. It is the only blackletter alphabet Unicode encodes completely, so no letter in a name falls back to a different weight, and it is the heaviest of the six, which is the half of the look that characters can actually carry. Use Spaced Fraktur instead if the name collapses into an unreadable block in the place you are pasting it, which happens most in small bio text. The struck and underlined sets are for effect on a word rather than for a name you want read.

Can I get gangster Old English letters A to Z?

Yes, all fifty-two of them, capitals and lowercase. The alphabet page lays every gangster Old English letter out as a chart you can copy one cell at a time, with the plain letter printed under each shape, which matters more than it sounds: blackletter capitals are genuinely hard to tell apart, and an initial copied from the wrong cell is a mistake you only notice after it is posted.

How do I get gangster Old English numbers?

You cannot, from any generator, and the reason is worth two sentences because every rival page hides it. The blackletter characters exist only because mathematicians wanted fraktur letters in equations; they already had numerals, so none were ever encoded, which leaves 0 to 9 with nothing to become. Any site that seems to pull it off has borrowed digits from an unrelated style without saying so. The numbers page shows the honest substitutes and which one to use in a year.

Is this the same as gothic or blackletter?

The letters are, yes. Gangster Old English is not a separate alphabet: it is blackletter drawn in a particular hand, so the characters underneath are the same ones a gothic or blackletter generator produces. What differs is everything a font file can hold and a character cannot, which is the flourishes and the fit between letters.

Can I get this as an image or a PNG?

Yes, from the typefaces section on the homepage, and it is worth knowing why that is a different thing from what is on this page. Everything here is characters, so saving it would mean screenshotting text at whatever size your screen happens to be. The export there instead draws your words in a real blackletter typeface and hands back a PNG or an SVG, which is what you actually want for a mockup, a poster or something you are sending to an artist. Send the PNG to anybody else: the SVG names the typeface rather than carrying it, so it opens in a plain serif on a machine without that face installed.

Can I use this for a tattoo design?

Only to show somebody what you mean. Copy a word from here into a message to an artist and it communicates the style perfectly. It is not artwork: a tattoo is drawn at whatever size the stencil needs, and these characters are screen text at one fixed set of shapes, so enlarging them gives you exactly the same letters with more pixels. An artist will redraw it either way, and that redrawing is where the tails and the connectors come from.
